About
One ordinary drive, everywhere.
herdfs started as one person's wish for a better drive: the same files on a laptop and on every server where agents run.
A drive, not a database.
Programs should see ordinary files. herdfs keeps the filesystem you already use and moves names, versions and permissions into one authority, with the bytes in a bucket you own.
Small, strict, and checked.
Every guarantee is tested with real tools, injected faults and an attacker trying to break it.
What it guarantees
- Root gets nothing extra
- open never waits
- Same bytes, any strategy
- Last save wins
- History stays
- Clients hold no keys
- Grants expire in a minute
- Agents are files
- Forks copy no data
- Any S3 bucket
- One authority
- Verified chunks
- Offline writes commit later
- Retention you set
- Erasure that erases
Mount your first space
Build from source, point the authority at a bucket and an OIDC issuer, and mount the same space on every box.
